English Summary/英文概要: Can you recognise a criminal by his face? A question of life or death for Yves Grevet’s new heroin.
1897, in the North-East of Italy. Frida, a 15-year old teenager, runs away from her native region in a stage-coach. Her parents, who are accused of odious crimes, were hanged two days before. The crowd is now asking for the head of the girl they’ve nicknamed “the demons’ daughter”. Frida hopes to find shelter in Bologna, in Doctor Grüber’s mansion, a famous doctor who seems fascinated by her case.
Strong points:
- A protagonist who captivates the reader by her courage and intelligence: Frida faces with amazing dignity the heinous looks of those who want to see in her a born criminal.
- A poetic page-turner: Frida must find allies, dress up as a man, lead a high risk investigation in order to exculpate her parents.
- Yves Grevet brilliantly mixes adventure, emotions and a reflection on what it means to be human, by introducing us to those who defended the theories which influenced the eugenic projects of the 20th century in Europe.
